Welcome back to the Telewellness Hub podcast! On today’s episode, I talk with Shobha George, LCSW, LICSW, MSW, MPhil, MBA a California-based therapist who holds degrees in Social Work, Philosophy, and Business Administration.
Shobha specializes in working with teens, as well as with people who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Shobha shares about the realization she had at a young age, with the help of a teacher, that she’s gifted as a helper and healer.
She’s been constantly helping others since her education in Social Work began, and now has her own practice where she works in-person and remotely with people all over California, as well as people on the east coast in Massachusetts.
In this episode, we talk about how therapy can help teens who are dealing with mental health issues, and what some of the obstacles might be that would keep young people from beginning therapy.
Shobha mentions that cultural beliefs or stigmas, peer discouragement, and being unsure about what therapy entails are common reasons why teens hesitate. She also shares how she connects with parents and equips them to be a support on their teen’s mental health journey.
Then, we chat about the specific diagnosis of OCD. We’ve all heard the term “OCD” being used to describe things that wouldn’t clinically qualify, but Shobha reminds us that around 2% of the U.S. population has diagnosable levels of obsessive thoughts and related compulsions, as explained in the DSM 5.
She shares that methodical, well-studied treatment modalities like Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP, a sub-type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) can help reduce anxiety levels and lower the frequency of OCD-related thoughts and behaviors over time.
It was so cool to hear some hope-filled examples of patients feeling better after beginning ERP with Shobha, and I know her expertise and passion have aided many clients in their wellness journeys.
